Ocon handed three-place grid drop after "massively dangerous" move on Russell

Renault driver will now start 14th for race at Silverstone

Renault driver Esteban Ocon has been handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Williams' George Russell during qualifying for the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.

Russell was on a flying lap in Q1 at Silverstone when Ocon pulled over on to the racing line through Aintree to overtake Alfa Romeo's Antonio Giovinazzi.

It led to a frustrated Russell proclaiming over the team radio that Ocon's move was "massively dangerous", and naturally led to a stewards' investigation.

In their summation, the stewards noted: "At the exit of turn 5 Giovinazzi was at the head of three cars and was on an in-lap, Ocon was next, on an out-lap and Russell was on a flying lap.

"While Russell approached, the team advised Ocon on the radio about Giovinazzi ahead but didn’t advise about Russell until very late.

"As Russell approached the two cars ahead, Ocon pulled to the right to overtake Giovinazzi and clearly impeded the much faster Russell. The team admitted that they did not assist their driver in this instance which led to the impeding."

Ocon, who qualified 11th, will now drop to 14th, elevating each of Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, Carlos Sainz in his McLaren and Haas driver Romain Grosjean by one place.

It means the French driver will also now start one place ahead of Russell.
