"Misconceived and poorly informed" - Racing Point rip into Renault protest
The team is confident the FIA will dismiss the case
Racing Point has slated as "misconceived and poorly informed" the protest lodged by Renault that has led to an FIA investigation and drawn Mercedes into the argument.
Renault launched its protest soon after the Styrian Grand Prix, citing a breach of the listed parts regulations, one which the FIA has declared as admissible.
It led to the brake ducts on the RP20 being immediately sealed and impounded, while the FIA has requested that particular part from Mercedes' title-winning W10 be examined as swiftly as possible.
In response, Racing Point has issued a strongly worded statement and is confident the protest will be dismissed by the FIA.
The statement, as seen by GPFans, read: "BWT Racing Point F1 team is extremely disappointed to see its results in the Styrian Grand Prix questioned by what it considers to be a misconceived and poorly informed protest.
"Any and all suggestion of wrongdoing is firmly rejected and the team will take all steps necessary to ensure the correct application of the regulations to the facts.
"Prior to the start of the season, the team co-operated with the FIA and satisfactorily addressed all questions regarding the origins of the designs of the RP20.
"The team is confident that the protest will be dismissed once it has presented its response."
For its part, Mercedes has simply confirmed it will follow the process and supply what has been requested.
Racing Point has made no secret of the fact its car is effectively a copy of the Mercedes W10, with the design taken from images of the car that created history last season by winning a sixth consecutive constructors' title.
At this stage, the results of the Styrian Grand Prix remain provisional, with Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll finishing sixth and seventh.
