Alonso 50-50 on competing at 2018 Le Mans

Alonso 50-50 on competing at 2018 Le Mans

Fernando Alonso has admitted that he does not know whether he will compete at the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 2018, citing the likelihood at around 50-50, but reiterated his desire to claim the motorsport triple crown which includes a win there as well as the Indy 500 and the Monaco GP.

Alonso has insisted that his main focus remains competing at the highest level in Formula One, but has not held back is ambition to venture into other motorsport disciplines in the past.

The Spaniard is currently in Daytona preparing for his endurance racing debut, but with a long F1 season ahead he has confessed that he is unsure whether Le Mans will happen this calendar year.

"It is no secret that I would like to compete at Le Mans in the future," he told Marca.

"If it's this year or not this year, I'm still not 100 per cent."

"It could happen, yes, but it's 50-50. There are many things that must come together for it to happen, and we are trying to do what we can," Alonso added.

"Fortunately, if it happens or not, everyone will know at the same time as I do."

Daytona is a 24-hour endurance race, and Alonso conceded that the qualifying race was "the least important qualifying race of my life."

Speaking to reporters in the United States, he said: "Knowing it’s a 24-hour race, it was probably the least important qualifying of my life until now.

"Normally I have 60 laps or 70 laps to recover what I did in qualifying; on Saturday we have 24 Hours. Qualifying was not the key point of this weekend, hopefully.

"I think it was a good session for us."
