Maybe one day I'll try NASCAR - Alonso

Fernando Alonso has claimed that he could potentially feature in NASCAR one day, but conceded that the time for that is not now due to the fact he would not be able to compete with the more experienced drivers in that particular motorsport currently.

Alonso has not won a championship in Formula One for over a decade but has spoken of his desire to claim motorsport's 'triple crown' which would include victories at Le Mans, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Indianapolis 500. This weekend, he is set to make his debut in endurance racing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

He has claimed previously that he would not enter NASCAR racing, but it appears he is now more open to the idea.

“Right now it looks quite far because I think with driving technique and the experience all those guys (NASCAR drivers) have, it’s quite difficult for me to achieve that level,” the Spaniard said.

“But I will never know until I try. I would like one day to test a car. After that, I probably would know how enjoyable it would be racing.

“From the outside, races are great because they’re all in a group. It’s not predictable at all. Until the last lap, you don’t know what’s going to happen.

“I love motorsports,” Alonso continued.

“I love racing. It was nice to go to the Indy 500. I felt competitive there. Now I’m going to endurance racing. Maybe one day I’ll try different series, maybe even NASCAR. Why not?”

Alonso will once again feature for McLaren in the upcoming season of Formula One, but is expected to continue to broaden his horizons.
