Giovinazzi handed Hungary grid penalty

Giovinazzi handed Hungary grid penalty

Antonio Giovinazzi was hit with a three-place grid penalty at the Hungarian Grand Prix for blocking Lance Stroll in Saturday's first segment at the Hungaroring.

Giovinazzi hindered Stroll through Turns 4 and 5 in Budapest, with the Racing Point man only able to go 19th-fastest and falling out of Q1 yet again.

The stewards found: "Notwithstanding the fact that the team incorrectly informed the driver of car 99 [Giovinazzi] that he was “in phase” with car 18 [Stroll], when in fact car 18 was on a push lap, it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that on an in lap, he makes all reasonable endeavours to watch for following cars that are on a push lap and to ensure they are not impeded.

"It was noted that car 99 was shown a blue flashing light halfway between turns 3 and 4."

The Alfa Romeo driver progressed to Q2 and qualified 14th, but he will drop to 17th on the grid.

Kevin Magnussen, George Russell and Sergio Perez will all move up a spot in the process.
