Hamilton confirms major Mercedes upgrade for Canada

Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that Mercedes will likely introduce an upgraded power unit to the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite lacking top-line pace to Ferrari at the start of 2019, the Silver Arrows have won all six races so far to start the season in ominous fashion.

Hamilton tops the drivers' standings after victories in Bahrain, China, Spain and Monaco.

Sebastian Vettel won in Montreal 12 months ago, while the SF90's straight-line advantage has been tipped to give Ferrari confidence at the power-hungry Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

However, Hamilton believes a new engine will help Mercedes gain even more performance from the W10.

He said: "A lot of analysis will be made, particularly towards trying to understand the tyres better and deliver better in terms of our processes, And on my side, trying to work even better with my engineers to try and extract more from my car.

"That means Bono [race engineer Pete Bonnington] and Marcus [Dudley, performance engineer] and a lot of the engineers trying to extract more information from the energy recovery system, and positioning the information in the right way so I can deliver more from this car.

"And I know the guys back at the factory are working on developments. We will probably have a new engine by the next race, so the car will continue to move forward as we will."

Mercedes are the latest manufacturer to upgrade its engine in 2019.

Honda upgraded Red Bull and Toro Rosso's power units in Azerbaijan, while Renault and Ferrari both introduced spec-2 engines in Spain.
