F1 needs the 'fastest and scariest cars' - Brundle

Originally written by Joas van Wingerden. This version is a translation.

Former Formula One driver and current Sky Sports racing pundit Martin Brundle believes that the sport must have 'the fastest, the scariest, and the best' cars in motorsport and has urged the owners of F1 Liberty Media to ensure of this if the popularity of the sport is going to evolve.

The 2017 season saw vehicles receive aerodynamic chassis changes which made them faster, but drivers have claimed they are much harder to drive than previous cars.

Further changes are going to be implemented in 2021 which include the standardisation of engines and a rule which limits teams to three engines per season. Brundle has urged Liberty Media to ensure the cars are still spectacular enough to attract an audience.

"They [Liberty] have got to be bold," Brundle said.

"They have got to say 'this is the future of Formula 1, this is the direction we're going in, join up or depart'. And they've got to be really clear on that.

"We have to be the fastest, the scariest, the best racing cars with the finest drivers wheel to wheel," he added.

"The objective is very easy, and I actually think getting there is relatively easy, but there's just an awful lot of politics and self-interest in the way. So I don't know where it is going to end up."

The main critics of the new engine changes by Liberty are Ferrari, who have actually threatened to leave the sport altogether if certain compromises are not met. However, Brundle thinks the Scuderia are exaggerating and will not leave.

"I think they [Ferrari] are bluffing," he continued.

"For example, where would Ferrari go? Go and get their backsides handed to them on a plate by Mahindra in Formula E?

"They are already in Le Mans, they won the GT world championship - nobody knows about that. They do no advertising around the world, not a penny, because Formula 1 does it for them. So I believe Liberty have to be super tough."
