Schumacher top rookie in F2 qualifying debut

Good effort from Mick!

Mick Schumacher will start his first Formula 2 race ahead of any other rookie in the field, having qualified in 10th for the Bahrain feature race. Luca Ghiotto took his maiden F2 pole position in Sakhir, ahead of Louis Deletraz and Nyck de Vries.

Schumacher's fellow Ferrari junior Callum Ilott brought out a red flag when he crashed into a wall, sapping momentum from several teams' efforts.

When the action resumed, Nicholas Latifi and De Vries took turns to snatch provisional pole, before Deletraz and finally Ghiotto went even better, the Italian securing pole for UNI-Venturi with a time of 1:40.504.

The result was a fine achievement for the Venturi team, debuting on the F2 grid this year in place of the Russian Time entry.

Schumacher's efforts were hampered by flat-spotting his right-front tyre at the same spot Ilott had gone off-track, but his time was good enough to leave him in the top half of the field.
