Hamilton’s fourth title is his best yet – Newey

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey has insisted that Lewis Hamilton's recent fourth world championship win 'is his best yet' and also revealed a desire to work with the Mercedes man, with an added regret he has not managed to work with Fernando Alonso or Michael Schumacher.

Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel started last season strongly and appeared poised to go on and win the championship, but Hamilton and Mercedes rallied after the summer break and eventually claims the driver's and constructor's championships.

This victory put Hamilton on to four world titles which equaled him with Vettel and F1 legend Alain Prost. Newey thinks that the latest triumph was the most impressive.

“I think his early championships were a bit up and down,” he told Sky Sports.

“But the championship he’s just put together this year was without doubt, in my opinion, his best one.”

“He’s put together such a strong campaign, there haven’t been any weak races. He’s known when to battle and when to let a position go rather than taking himself out.”

Newey went on to express a regret that he has not worked with Schumacher or Alonso at their peak, claiming the former would have been "fascinating" to work with.

“Obviously a great competitor, supreme competitor," he said in reference to the German legend.

“He always felt slightly, kind of, the enemy in truth. Shame he let himself down with some of his driving stunts, I think that was just his competitive instinct taking him too far.”

“Fernando, again, came close [to working with] a few times. Obviously extremely competitive. For him to have only won two championships all those years ago, who could have forecast that at the end of 2007 he wouldn’t win another one? He’s still there, still gets up doesn’t he?”
