Ocon reacts after Russell's Williams move takes away 2019 hope

Esteban Ocon congratulated fellow Mercedes junior George Russell on his appointment at Williams, despite the move likely ending his hopes of lining up on the Formula 1 grid in 2019. Russell was confirmed as a Williams driver on a "multi-year" deal on Friday.

Ocon is set to lose his Force India seat to Lance Stroll when the Canadian leaves Williams to join the team his father now owns.

The Frenchman had been linked to Williams after potential moves to the likes of McLaren and Toro Rosso fell flat due to Mercedes' hesitance to free him from his Silver Arrows deal.

Ocon was also denied a move to Renault when they swooped for Daniel Ricciardo.

Although he is facing the prospect of spending 2019 on F1's sidelines, Ocon says he remains certain he will return in 2020.

And there were no hard feelings towards Russell after his Williams appointment was confirmed.

Russell is closing in on the Formula 2 title in his debut season in the series, having won

GP3 and British Formula 4 in the past two years.
