Wehrlein set to return in 2019
Pascal Wehrlein could be set for a sensational return to Formula One action in the 2019 season next year, with Toro Rosso poised to swoop for the services of the former Sauber driver, who lost his place for the 2017/18 campaign to Charles Leclerc.
The 2019 driving line-up in F1 is already going to look different, with Daniel Ricciardo joining Renault, Pierre Gasly moving to Red Bull, Charles Leclerc being promoted to Ferrari, and Fernando Alonso announcing his retirement.
Toro Rosso, previously the team of Gasly, have taken the opportunity of the Frenchman leaving to completely overhaul their drivers, with Brendon Hartley at risk of losing his position after an abject 2018 campaign.
According to both Sky Sports and L’Equipe, Wehrlein is set to be given the opportunity to return to F1 with Toro Rosso after being left out this season by Sauber in favour of Leclerc.
The German is viewed as a talented young driver and although he does not have a raft of experience in F1, he is just 23-years-old. Wehrlein himself confirmed talks were ongoing with teams, but did not provide details.
“I am looking for new challenges and opportunities, and am currently talking to other teams about a seat for next season,” Wehrlein revealed.
Another driver who is likely to join Toro Rosso is Daniil Kvyat, who is to be announced for the 2019 season at the upcoming Grand Prix in Russia.
“He will drive for Toro Rosso next year. Contract signed,” Former Red Bull driver turned pundit Doornbos Ziggo Sport Totaal in regards to Kvyat.
