Wolff fears championship 'swing'
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has revealed that he is not getting too ahead of himself after Lewis Hamilton successfully reclaimed top spot in the driver's championship following his win at the French Grand Prix on Sunday, insisting it can swing back "so quickly".
Hamilton was impressive behind the wheel at the weekend and led from pole to flag, comfortably besting Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen in second and third respectively.
The victory allowed the Brit to overtake Sebastian Vettel in the driver rankings, going 14 points clear after the Ferrari driver could only finish fifth after an early collision with Valtteri Bottas in the first lap.
Mercedes lead the constructor rankings too, but Wolff reckons that nothing can be taken for granted by the drivers as a turnaround can happen quickly again.
“It can swing so quickly,” the Mercedes team principal warned.

“A DNF and the other guy winning makes it swing in the other direction. I don’t expect this to change in whatsoever way. This is going to be the story of the season.”
Hamilton and Bottas secured the front row in qualifying at the weekend, and although the latter's Grand Prix was ruined by the crash with Vettel, Wolff was happy about the progress of the Silver Arrows.
“Overall, we leave seeing the positive side of our performance this weekend,” he continued.
“The car was quick and with our upgrades, it felt like we made a step forward. Thank you to everybody in the team who worked so hard to bring them to the track this weekend.
“But we can’t afford to make any assumptions about what this means for the next races – it’s still a three-way fight and we will need to be at our very best if we wish to repeat this performance.”
