Wolff: We have responsibility to keep F1 great

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has joined the likes of Niki Lauda and Bernie Ecclestone in his criticism of Liberty Media's vision of the future of F1, particulary regarding the split of prize money that the teams will each receive in the 2018 season.

A number of key officials connected to F1 have expressed their dismay at a number of upcoming initiatives being introduced by the new owners, with focus being placed on new engine regulations and the profit split between all of the F1 teams.

And now Wolff has voiced his concerns, too, as the pressure increases on Liberty Media to understand the machinations of the sport.

He told German publication Bild am Sonntag: "Bernie Ecclestone invented something and made it into something great over 50 years.

"And we now have the responsibility to keep it great. We have different opinions about how to do that, but we will continue to talk to each other."

Last week Lauda told Globo that he was willing to give Liberty Media time, but admitted he has been concerned by the lack of clarity surrounding the structure of revenues and, crucially, how the cars themselves are created.

He said: "One is that they have restructured F1, hiring a number of professionals at a cost of $70 million a year, which could mean less money for the teams. We still don't know what amount will be divided between us in 2018.

"Every time we talk, I get the feeling they (Liberty) want the Nascar system, where all the teams are the same so that everyone can win. But this is the opposite of F1.

"In our competition, we honour the best car, the best designers and the best drivers. And that's something Ross (Brawn) should know because he was a part of this F1," he added.
