A 'starting point' or cracking open the champagne? - How teams reacted to Liberty's 2021 vision
Liberty Media finally outlined their vision for Formula 1 in 2021 and beyond at the ahrain Grand Prix on Friday. Cheaper engines, budget caps and more involvement in governance are all on the menu for the teams. But what do they make of it? Here's how those affected reacted to the news.
TOTO WOLFF (MERCEDES) "A STARTING POINT"
"It's good we are getting started in understanding how the shareholder Liberty sees F1's future, have some perspective from the FIA as well. There is not clarity yet on what is the exact engine proposal. I think the FIA and Liberty have to come to a joint opinion and then tell us what the concept looks like and then we would enter into a discussion in the strategy group to decide whether that is the correct path or not."

CLAIRE WILLIAMS (WILLIAMS) "LET'S CRACK OPEN SOME CHAMPAGNE"
"I was extremely positive about today's meeting. I think we've all hoped for change, under our new management, and I think today they presented change. For a team like ours, based on what they presented, it was an extremely good day for us. I came back thinking, 'let's crack open some champagne,' because from our perspective, if we can get these new regulations through and if Liberty or FOM do everything they say they're going to do, then from our perspective I know that Williams' future is safe. That's not to say we were on the brink or anywhere close, but today's sport, the way it's structured, and with the financial disparity between teams, then the likelihood of Williams's survival in the medium or long term is looking pretty bleak."

CHRISTIAN HORNER (RED BULL) "IT'S AMBITIOUS"
"It needs to be done within the next couple of months, but that's ambitious. It's ambitious but they've got to go for it. At least they've put a target down to say we want this nailed within a couple of months. The guys from P4 downwards are potentially going to get a lot of upside. So you should see some fairly happy faces down that end of the paddock and some bigger challenges at this end of the paddock."

ZAK BROWN (MCLAREN) "IF THE FAN WINS, WE ALL WIN"
"I think we all recognise that the sport starts with the fan and that's what Liberty are focused on – putting on a better for the fan. And if the fan wins, we all win. The sponsors win, the media wins, television ratings win. I think we all recognise that the sport is not where it needs to be today so it's in our collective interest to improve the show. That means we're all going to have make varying degrees of compromises but I think we'll ultimate get there at the end and I'm excited about the future of Formula 1."
