No mistake from F1 to race at Nürburgring in October - Steiner
Haas team principal has defended F1 after FP1 cancelled
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner is adamant Formula 1 has not made a mistake in holding a race at the Nürburgring in October.
F1 was always taking a risk in choosing to stage a grand prix so late in the year due to the expected poor weather conditions, and the venue that sits in the shadow of the Eifel mountain range did not disappoint.
The FIA was forced to abandon first practice for the Eifel Grand Prix due to the foggy conditions, in tandem with the rain, grounding the medical helicopter.
Steiner, though, defended F1 bosses, primarily in their remarkable bid to come up with a calendar at all this year in the face of the Covid pandemic.
"I wouldn't say it's a mistake," said Steiner, when asked by Sky Sports F1 if F1 had made an error of judgment in opting for the Nürburgring at this time of year.
"This year nothing is a mistake. Holding any grand prix is a success in my opinion.
"If you are a beggar you cannot be a chooser, how we say. We needed to get something in, and this was the best option."
While qualifying on Saturday is at present forecast to be dry, a wet race is currently scheduled for Sunday.
Steiner added: "It's not the first time the weather has been like this.
"Tomorrow if it is better and Sunday it is a rain race, who actually cares. This year, any race we can get in at any time, I think it's a win for us."
