Gasly in the dark over F1 future
Could Gasly move away from the Red Bull family like Carlos Sainz?
Pierre Gasly has declared he does not know what the future holds for him in Formula 1 after Christian Horner recently suggested a return to Red Bull was not an option.
Gasly, whose contract with AlphaTauri expires at the end of this year, has continued his impressive form from the latter half of 2019, picking up points for the team in four of the seven races this season.
With Alexander Albon almost certain to retain his seat at Red Bull, which he took from the Frenchman last summer, Gasly could be looking elsewhere to find a seat on the F1 grid for 2021.
Where Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo have both recently left the Red Bull 'family' to join Renault, Gasly is still in the dark over his F1 future.
"It’s not up to me to decide," added Gasly, who is likely to be retained by AlphaTauri given his performances so far this season.
"The only thing I can do is to be competitive. I guess strong performances will be rewarded. At the moment, I don’t know what the future is so we’ll have to wait a bit more."
Heading into this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, this is not on the mind of the 24-year-old as there still are 10 races to worry about in 2020.
"At the moment, it’s not really a question about that," said Gasly. "I’m contracted with Red Bull and my priority is just to perform as good as possible and we’ll see the opportunities that arise in the future."
Red Bull team principal Horner, recently quizzed about a potential return for Gasly, has suggested he will not be taking him back on board in favour of Albon.
"I think he [Gasly] is performing well in the environment at Alpha Tauri, I think it is a good car this year," said Horner.
"I think perhaps it is an easier car to drive than perhaps our car has been at times, but Alex's performances on Sundays have been very strong.
"His defending, his overtaking, his attacking is always strong and I think we are going in the right direction.
"I think it is good to see Pierre getting back up to speed which is why he is still on the programme, but we are happy with the way things are."
