F1 fans enraged as Hamilton misses out on top British award again
Lewis Hamilton missed out on the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award, despite yet another title-winning campaign in 2019, and F1's fans were not impressed.
Britain's most successful F1 star by some distance, Hamilton has only won the award once – in 2014 – and finished second in consecutive years after Ben Stokes won the public vote on Sunday.
Hamilton has finished second twice more in previous votes, in 2007 and 2008.
Only one sport, athletics, has returned more winners of the award than Formula 1 across the years, with Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell having previously been honoured in years that they were not crowned world champion.
Having taken is sixth world title in 2019, Hamilton is now within touching distance of Michael Schumacher's all-time records for grand prix victories and drivers' championships.
It was not enough to see Hamilton crowned the winner, however, and the Mercedes driver was not present at the ceremony in Aberdeen, Scotland, having attended last year, only to have comments he made about his hometown of Stevenage cause controversy.
Having seen Hamilton dominate F1 like few others' in the sport's history, fans were enraged to see the Briton miss out on the award yet again.
I am not a great fan of #Hamilton but after 6 world championship titles I think he is a worthy winner of #SPOTY

Or maybe its confirms he has not been totally endeared by the British public and #F1 has become boring with only 3 main teams in real contention.
Wow @bbc5live just wow!

10 minutes talking about #SPOTY and you can't bring yourselves to mention Lewis Hamilton.
We know you have an issue with him, but he came second, about time you respected what he has done.#bbc5live #5livebreakfast
So Hamilton

wins world title for 6 years and dosnt get the trophy. Your logic is crap. Anyway Hamilton probably dosnt give a damn if he wins SPOTY or not whilst looking at becoming the record F1 world title winner.
So Lewis Hamilton wins a 6th #F1 world title, more than anyone except Schumacher and has surpassed him in many other stats yet still doesn't win #spoty 🤔

Lewis Hamilton last year attended #SPOTY 2018 = Was criticised for his dress and his slums comment (Taken out of context).
— James Kurt (@nestlepurelife7) December 16, 2019
Lewis Hamilton doesn't attend #SPOTY 2019 because his with his family = criticised for his hair, American accent, Tax, Arrogance or etc...
He can't win 🤷♂
So Dina Asher Smith wins a gold medal proper, Lewis Hamilton literally makes history winning for 6th time, yet a MacDonalds eating thug is crowned a top sportsman.... what is this total nonsense. #SPOTY

What??? Cricket Stokesy. Na, as much as I don't really like him Lewis Hamilton - 6 times World Champion - SIX TIMES. He should have won. He's never won it... #SPOTY

What Lewis Hamilton has achieved year after year for 9 months of the year is amazing. Ben stokes had a great World Cup and great year, but Lewis has been more consistent to deserves it. #spoty

@LewisHamilton is 6 time world champion yet he's 2nd?Lewis Hamilton is VERY Underappreciated and doesn't get the respect he deserves at all, for being the most successful british Sportsman screw them Lewis just go and keep winning and make more money :p #SPOTY #BBCSPOTY

The amount of hate for Lewis Hamilton is uncalled for and I'm not even his biggest fan. People think he "just drives a car", I guarantee most who say that couldn't even fit in it #SPOTY
