F1 fans enraged as Hamilton misses out on top British award again

Lewis Hamilton missed out on the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year award, despite yet another title-winning campaign in 2019, and F1's fans were not impressed.

Britain's most successful F1 star by some distance, Hamilton has only won the award once – in 2014 – and finished second in consecutive years after Ben Stokes won the public vote on Sunday.

Hamilton has finished second twice more in previous votes, in 2007 and 2008.

Only one sport, athletics, has returned more winners of the award than Formula 1 across the years, with Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell having previously been honoured in years that they were not crowned world champion.

Having taken is sixth world title in 2019, Hamilton is now within touching distance of Michael Schumacher's all-time records for grand prix victories and drivers' championships.

It was not enough to see Hamilton crowned the winner, however, and the Mercedes driver was not present at the ceremony in Aberdeen, Scotland, having attended last year, only to have comments he made about his hometown of Stevenage cause controversy.

Having seen Hamilton dominate F1 like few others' in the sport's history, fans were enraged to see the Briton miss out on the award yet again.
