Ferrari engine upgrade could be difference in Canada

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner gave a positive review of Ferrari's upgraded power unit, having had use of it at the Monaco Grand Prix. The American outfit hope that the new engine will give them an even greater boost this week in Canada.

Monaco's tight, twisting nature means engine power is not a crucial factor in success.

However, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a different proposition, with long straights and heavy braking zones meaning power is crucial.

"The performance of the new engine was very good. There were no complaints," Steiner said.

"Monaco, as we know, is not a track where the power makes a big difference. It's always good to have it, but it doesn't make a big difference.

"In Canada, we'll really see how much better the engine is. We are hoping it's a good boost and doing what it should be doing."

Kevin Magnussen put the Haas on P6 in qualifying to show the might of the package and hopes for an even greater step in Montreal.

He said: "It was good to try the new engine. It looks like it's a bit better and a good upgrade. Let's see how it goes in Montreal with the longer straights."

Magnussen eventually finished 14th as an ill-timed pit-stop cost him several places.

Haas have also struggled to get the Pirelli tyres into the working range at several races this year and Steiner is uncertain if the problem will be solved in Canada.

He said: "I think we have a handle on the car, but we're not 100 percent sure about the tyres, because it's so track-specific if the tyre gets up to temperature or not.

"The only proof is when you get there and run on a Friday to see what you can get out of it. We are a little bit more optimistic than we were about four weeks ago."
