W Series secures the TV deal F1 desperately needs

The W Series will have each of its races broadcast on free-to-air television in the United Kingdom, it has been confirmed, with Channel 4 picking up rights to air the first season of the female-only racing series in its on-track entirety.

The series has been established in an attempt to help women into Formula 1 and will debut at a grand prix venue in Hockenheim.

Established by a group of F1 veterans led by 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard, the W Series will offer a $1.5million prize pot to 18 racers in 2019.

The European F3 Championship has run as a support act to DTM in recent years, with the likes of Lando Norris, Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon making it to F1 – it will be hoped that appearing in front of the DTM's crowd will give the W Series similar exposure.

With live F1 having almost entirely departed from free-to-air TV in the UK this year – only the British GP will be live on C4 – the W Series will effectively become the most prominent racing series on British airwaves, giving the inaugural running a huge potential boost.

"I've had the privilege of working with Channel 4 as a Formula 1 commentator for many years and I'm thrilled that their appetite for live motorsport has grown to cover W Series too," Coulthard said.

"Channel 4's experience with Formula 1 will prove invaluable as we work together to produce a compelling show for viewers, fans, partners and sponsors alike."
