Alonso exit shows F1 must change - Sainz

Fernando Alonso's departure from Formula 1 should be a wake-up call to the sport, according to Carlos Sainz. The two-time world champion will be replaced by his fellow Spaniard at McLaren last year, having grown tired of the team's wait to deliver a competitive car once again.

Returning to McLaren in 2015 has proven to be a mistake for Alonso, as the team have failed in partnerships with Honda and, this year, Renault.

The 37-year-old has instead turned his attention to winning motorsport's 'Triple Crown' and he will leave F1 next year with a view to adding the Indianapolis 500 to victories at the Monaco GP and Le Mans 24 Hours to match Graham Hill's unique feat.

Alonso has admitted he would not be leaving F1 if he were able to compete better and Sainz believes the loss of his compatriot shows the balance of F1 is not right.

"I think the fact he is leaving is a big loss for Formula 1," said Sainz.

"To not have one of the best drivers or the best drivers in motorsport at the moment in the grid is a big loss.

"So I think it is something for Formula 1 and to everyone to consider why one of the best drivers is leaving and why we cannot have a bit more competitive grid where many drivers can fight for wins or for podiums. I think it's a thing to consider and something to think about for the future."

Max Verstappen said he could appreciate how F1 no longer appealed to Alonso, after years of McLaren's midfield mediocrity.

"I think Fernando is a winner and he wants to win races," he said. "He didn't see that happening in the near future and of course he has tried already for a few years.

"I can understand why he leaves. Probably some new advantage where he probably can win again I think, that will motivate him very much and we'll see in the future whether he comes back or not."
