Verstappen: Kvyat the 'right choice' for Toro Rosso
Max Verstappen has backed Red Bull's decision to appoint Daniil Kvyat as one of their Toro Rosso drivers for the 2019 Formula 1 campaign, saying it was the "right choice" to re-hire the Russian after they demoted him in 2016 and let him go altogether in 2017.
In 2014, Kvyat made his debut in F1 with Red Bull before going on to perform for Toro Rosso. Following some abject performances in 2016, he was let go by the team in favour of Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley, with Ferrari picking him up as a reserve driver for 2018.
With Gasly's announced promotion to Red Bull, Kyat will make his return next year, and Verstappen reckons it's the right move.
"He has experience, he knows the teams and they know him," Verstappen suggested.
"That's all very useful next year, when Toro Rosso will have some more Red Bull parts. I think it's the right choice.
He's back! Scuderia Toro Rosso is pleased to welcome back @kvyatofficial for the 2019 season!
"I would not know who else should be there. There's no one in the Red Bull programme with enough license points. Daniil has not driven for a while, but I think it's possible he has still developed as a driver," the Dutchman concluded.
