Fernando Alonso heeft na afloop van de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten een stop en go-penalty gekregen, in totaal telt de wedstrijdleiding zo'n dertig seconden bij de tijd van de Spanjaard op. Daardoor is de tweevoudig kampioen uiteindelijk als vijftiende afgevlagd en dat terwijl hij na een veelbewogen rit als zevende over de streep kwam.
Het heeft allemaal te maken met de toekomstig teamgenoot van Alonso bij Aston Martin, Lance Stroll. De twee heren kwamen elkaar tegen op Circuits of the Americas, waarbij de Canadees het pad van de Spanjaard blokkeerde tijdens een inhaalpoging, het tafereel eindigde voor Stroll in tranen, maar Alonso kon na het vervangen van zijn voorvleugel verder racen. In de ronden erna viel de spiegel van de Spanjaard van zijn auto, het was gevolgschade van de botsing en de stewards hebben besloten dat de Alpine niet veilig was om verder te racen en delen daarom de straf uit. Tijdens de race heeft de wedstrijdleiding echter niet ingegrepen en voor Alpine is er daarom genoeg reden voor een protest en tijdens het raceweekend in Mexico krijgt het verhaal nog een staartje.
Straf
Ondanks dat de partijen nog niet met elkaar zijn uitgesproken is de straf al uitgedeeld en op social media is er maar weinig begrip voor de actie van de FIA.

Nah this is the FIA own mistake. In the official document, the stewards blame the race director for not spotting the problem. Alonso drives in this condition for 30+ laps but now 5 hours after the race, they give Alonso a penalty. Another embarrassing mistake from the FIA.
Almost killed (each of us would have been badly shaken), he still manages to reach the pits and ending the race in an incredible P7 and instead of praising this you’re giving him a penalty, embarrassing! Meanwhile, a guy who made someone else DNF only received a 5” penalty! 🤡
Why?!!! Why?!!! 5 hours later you make decissions. How can this happen in a sport, no referee should have the right to make a decission 5 hours after the event has finished. Its just unacceptable not only in F1 but in sports. FIA is seriously taking the spirit of this sport away.
You had 30 laps to show the black and orange flag and you didnt. Then, 5 hours later you decide to give him a penalty due to a FIA's error. What a shame! You have hassled one of the best performance of the season.
WTF i mean during 2020 season my man Lewis finished P1 with half tyre and nothing happened then, and there’s plenty of examples during all F1 history. You guys are destroying the show with this nonesense statements, the man literally come back from back of the grid to P7 🤦🏻♂️
You guys have no respect, what Fernando Alonso did yesterday was insane. He got into a crash when it wasn’t even his mistake, he was flying all over the track, he decided to keep going and do his best, he finishes in points and now u guys do this after all the effort he did…
