On This Day: Senna delivers McLaren's 100th F1 win

Ayrton Senna delivered one of his most masterful performances to secure a milestone victory for McLaren at the Brazilian grand Prix on this day 25 years ago. Torrential conditions were no match for the great man as Senna beat the technologically advanced Williams of Damon Hill to give his team their 100th Formula 1 race win.

Senna had lost out to his returning rival Alain Prost in the 1993 season-opener in South Africa and Williams once again looked the team to beat as the Frenchman took pole position by almost a second from Hill - with Senna almost two seconds off the pace.

Hill got away slowly, allowing Senna to sneak ahead, but the Briton would eventually regain second place on lap 11, while ahead of them Prost was streaking clear.

It looked as though it would not be Senna's day when he was hit with a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for overtaking under yellow flags, but the heavens soon opened - handing him a chance.

Prost remained on slick tyres, having failed to hear a radio call from his team, and the error soon came back to haunt them as he ran into the prone Minardi of Christian Fittipaldi, wo had spun at the first corner, taking both drivers out of the race.

This period of the race was also notable for the first official use of a Safety Car in F1, helping marshals clear up the damage caused in that crash.

The skies soon cleared and the track began to dry, after the leading group pitted for slick rubber, Senna got the better of Hill in the changing conditions before streaking clear to take victory by over 16 seconds.

Senna was famously handed a Brazil flag bearing his name by a fan at the side of the track as he completed his victory lap.

Michael Schumacher was third for Benetton, notably 45 seconds adrift of Senna, despite his car being fitted with a more powerful Ford engine than had been afforded to McLaren for the 1993 campaign.

Senna went on to win three more times in 1993, but finished second behind a dominant Prost in the drivers' standings.

It was to be the last Brazilian victory at Interlagos in F1 for 13 years, until Felipe Massa won from pole for Ferrari in 2006.
