Andretti applies to enter new F1 team from 2024
Former F1 world champion Mario Andretti has indicated his son Michael is bidding to enter the sport with a new team.
Andretti Jr was close to taking over Alfa Romeo's entry last year before the deal broke down at the "11th hour" due to "control issues".
The American has seemingly taken a new route in order to join the F1 grid by staking a claim to field his own team under the entry name Andretti Global.
"Michael has applied to the FIA to field a new F1 team starting in 2024," tweeted 1978 world champion Andretti Sr.
"His entry, Andretti Global, has the resources and checks every box.
"He is awaiting the FIA's determination."
The addition of Andretti to the grid would further boost F1's standing in the United States, with exposure gained from Netflix series 'Drive to Survive' playing a vital role in piquing fan interest and the addition of a second American race to the calendar in Miami.
Andretti Jr runs one of the most successful IndyCar operations and was expected to have signed young American star Colton Herta to the F1 outfit had his Alfa Romeo deal gone through.
The addition of an extra team to the sport would ensure a 22-car grid for the first time since Manor collapsed at the end of 2016.
