Lando Norris has revealed it is his objective to become the team leader at McLaren by the end of his latest contract extension.

Norris, who is currently in his third season with McLaren, recently pledged his loyalty to the team by signing a new "multi-year" deal that is understood to expire at the end of 2023.

The 21-year-old has since revealed he is focused on cementing his position as the number one driver. “That is my goal," said Norris. "That is what I want to achieve.

"I want to be that kind of guy to lead the team, who has been there for many years, who has helped them through the bad times and helped them achieve the good times.

“That is the kind of position that I want to be in and that is why I’m still here, that is why I signed for some more years, is that I want to be in that position."

Norris currently has edge on Ricciardo

After racing alongside Carlos Sainz in his first two years at McLaren, the Briton has this year been partnered by seven-time race winner Daniel Ricciardo.

Despite the former Red Bull driver's pedigree, however, it has been Norris who has so far consistently led the way for McLaren. He added: “Even this year, I have already taken a step forward in that position.

"I’m feeling like a different and improved driver [compared] to the last couple of seasons, taking on more responsibility and leading the team in more ways.

“So that is definitely something I would like, something that I want to be able to do going into the future.”
