Lewis Hamilton wins Laureus World Sportsman of the Year
Lewis Hamilton has been named as Laureus World Sportsman of the Year alongside footballer Lionel Messi.
After another successful season with the Silver Arrows in 2019, the Brit claimed his sixth drivers' championship and helped Mercedes claim their sixth constructors' title.
The 35-year-old has enjoyed the best period of his career since moving to Mercedes, picking up five out of the last six world championships, with a Nico Rosberg victory sandwiched in between in 2016. Should he emerge as champion again in 2020, he will equal the all-time record held by Michael Schumacher, with seven.

As well as equalling title wins, Hamilton is targeting breaking even more of the former Ferrari driver's accomplishments, from race wins, Grand Prix Hat tricks [Pole, Win, Fastest Lap] and the number of podium spots gained.
Thank you @LaureusSport for this incredible award of World Sportsman of the Year. To think that my name is going to slot in alongside the legends, who have won this award before me, is really humbling. Thank you again šš¾ pic.twitter.com/XqYynmgQ2P

The last time the Stevenage born driver picked up a similar award to Laureus' was back in 2014 when he won the iconic BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He hasn't won that since, but won't do his chances any harm this year should he equal Schumacher's championship record.
