Verstappen takes Brazil win as Albon has podium robbed by Hamilton

Max Verstappen put right his disappointment of a year ago by charging to a superb Brazilian Grand Prix victory, with Pierre Gasly incredibly joining him on the podium after Alexander Albon was robbed of a top-three finish.

Verstappen dominated the race and was a clear winner, while Albon and Gasly were the beneficiaries of a late crash between Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel to move into contention.

Lewis Hamilton was running second at the time of the late collision between the Ferraris, but oddly pitted out of position with very few laps remaining.

He passed Gasly to take third, but pitched Albon into a spin while trying to take P2 and was eventually bumped out of third place by a five-second time penalty.

Verstappen was set to win the race at Interlagos a year ago until a collision with Esteban Ocon handed P1 to Hamilton, but he was untouchable 12 months on, overtaking Hamilton in two separate moments in a supreme show of skill.

Gasly came through the carnage to take second and his screams over team radio told the full story as he ends a season which has seen him demoted from Red Bull and had his long-term future questioned with a maiden podium - just Toro Rosso's third ever - in his grasp.

There was plenty of sympathy for the man who replaced him, with Albon also on for a first appearance on the rostrum until Hamilton dived down a gap that the Thai driver left open.

Carlos Sainz was the beneficiary of Hamilton's sanction, but a wait for the stewards' decision meant he would not take to the rostrum for his maiden 'podium' finish.
