Budget changes won't save F1 - Todt

FIA President Jean Todt has stated that the new regulations enforcing tighter budget constrictions on teams will not be enough to keep expenditure to a manageable level, and believes that further stipulations will require more 'sophistication' in order to have the desired effect.

The issue of how much each team spends, particularly on research and development, has long been an issue in F1, and the decision to control budgets came with a view to levelling the playing field among teams to make the sport more competitive.

There has been mixed reviews in terms of what impact the current rules will have and Todt agrees that a more considered, detailed approach will be required to ensure that the long-term future of F1 is secured.

Todt said to Motorsport: "We have been talking about cost control/cost cap for a while. I believe it is a good move, but for me it has to be a combination.

“We need to make regulations which will have some impact on the actual costs. To simply say we are going make a cost cap, I don’t think it will work. So far, any attempt has not worked.

“We have to be able to agree something that will be more sophisticated in order to achieve that.”
