Mercedes employees sacked after racism probe
Mercedes sacked four members of staff following a reported complaint of racist behaviour within the Formula 1 world champions' Brackley base.
According to a report in The Sun, a Muslim member of staff was subjected to abuse from colleagues.
"Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd confirms that four individuals were dismissed from the company on 2 August 2019," a statement read.
"These dismissals followed an internal investigation that confirmed breaches of our diversity and equality policy.
"We condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms and acted immediately upon the complaint.
"We value the diversity of our employees and it is a source of strength for our team. Our working environment is based on appreciation and mutual respect."
The Silver Arrows world champion driver Lewis Hamilton has often spoken of his desire to increase diversity in motorsport, as well as against incidents of racism.
Hamilton saw his 'Britishness' questioned by a journalist ahead of the British Grand Prix, prompting a wave of support for the five-time world champion, including from former England football captain Rio Ferdinand.
"Every day is an opportunity to elevate and to shine and to do something new. My mum's white, my dad's black. I've got the best of both worlds," Hamilton said in July.
"I've got supporters from all religions, all different ethnic backgrounds, and I love that hopefully I'm a part of helping bring people together that perhaps wouldn't be together in the past."
