Fernando Alonso has claimed that his main career focus remains Formula One and claiming a third driver's world championship despite the fact he is currently preparing to take part in the Daytona 24 Hours race whilst also expressing a desire to claim the motorsport 'triple crown'.

The Spaniard is viewed as one of the most talented drivers on the circuit but has not won the title for over a decade. He last emerged victorious back in 2005 when he recorded his second world championship for Renault, but a series of team moves, as well as a barren period over the past three years with McLaren struggling with Honda engines, has left him without as many titles as he would have predicted 10 years ago.

Alonso's closest brushes with more success came in 2010 and 2012, but he ended up losing out on both occasions to Sebastian Vettel.

He has previously expressed a desire to claim motorsport's 'triple crown' which includes wins at the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500, and Le Mans 24. However, he has insisted that F1 remains his top priority.

"Of course I focus first and foremost on formula one and the goal of winning a third world title," he told Speed Week.

"With the Renault power unit we should be able to get involved at the front again.

"However, I also have plans for classic events that do not overlap with the F1 calendar. This race (Daytona) is the first step in endurance racing and of course I hope I like it because Le Mans is another goal of mine. If Le Mans works out this year, it would be great and hopefully next year I could be back at the Indy 500."

Despite these ventures into other disciplines, Alonso insisted he does not have interest in taking part in NASCAR racing.

"Those cars require a unique driving style which can only be acquired through a lot of practice and I do not have that many free weekends," Alonso continued

"But after the 24 hour here I'm sure I'll watch the Nascar race, but that will be my only step towards Nascar - watching on TV."
