Alonso falls short of Schumacher record with Mexico DNF

Fernando Alonso's early retirement from the Mexican Grand Prix means he will be unable to break one Michael Schumacher's all-time record for the most laps raced in Formula 1 before he departs the sport at the end of the season.

Alonso will leave F1 second on the all-time list for laps raced and races entered – Schumacher and the German's old Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello ahead of him in the respective categories.

He entered the race in Mexico 173 laps adrift of Schumacher with 197 to go in 2018, but he only toured the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez three times before running into debris caused by Nico Hulkenberg swiping the front wing of Esteban Ocon's Force India.

Alonso's 2019 plans remain a mystery, but the Spaniard is determined to have another crack at the Indianapolis 500 in an attempt to take out motorsport's 'Triple Crown' – adding the famous IndyCar race at the Brickyard to previous victories at the Monaco GP and Le Mans 24 Hours.
