Verstappen rages at 'crap' qualifying

Max Verstappen branded his Saturday as "crap" after missing out on pole position at the Mexican Grand Prix to Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Verstappen looked set to set a new record as Formula 1's youngest pole-sitter in history until the Australian produced a mega last-gasp lap.

Verstappen was quickest in all three practice sessions, Q1 and after the first runs of Q3.

However, it was Ricciardo who led Red Bull's first front-row lockout since USA 2013, pipping Verstappen by 0.026 seconds.

The Dutchman was not looking on the bright side after qualifying and immediately blamed his car on a failure to take pole.

"The whole qualifying was crap," he said.

"We had the same problems as FP2, the engine braking is not like I wanted and rear locking in the car.

"We tried to make the best of it, I thought we had enough but it's still good to be second."

Verstappen won in Mexico from second on the grid 12 months ago, slipstreaming Sebastian Vettel into turn one before going on to dominate the grand prix.
