'Raikkonen told Ferrari fate at Monza'
Kimi Raikkonen was told he will not drive for Ferrari in 2019, according to reports in the driver's native Finland. Former F1 driver Mika Salo has claimed in Finnish newspaper Iltalehti that failing to win in Monza sealed the Iceman's Maranello fate.
Raikkonen secured Ferrari's first pole at Monza since 2010, but could not convert it into a victory as Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes' strategy won out after Sebastian Vettel's first-lap collision with his title rival.
The Finn was understood to have the trust and backing of both Vettel and new Ferrari CEO Louis C. Camilleri, however a contract signed with former president Sergio Marchionne before his passing will see Charles Leclerc step up, with the backing of new president John Elkann.
Reports around the Italian Grand Prix suggested that Ferrari had investigated the prospect of paying Leclerc compensation to renege on his deal and give Raikkonen another year.
However, after Raikkonen was unable to hold Hamilton at bay, it is reported that he was informed he will need to look elsewhere for an F1 drive in 2019.
Although Raikkonen has enjoyed an amicable relationship with Vettel, his performances have sometimes left much to be desired and Marchionne branded him a "laggard" last season.
The Finn's performances have improved this year - he has secured nine podiums and is third in the drivers' standings - but he remains without a grand prix win since returning to the Scuderia in 2014, a run that stretches back 109 races to the 2013 Australian Grand Prix.
Raikkonen could yet find a spot in F1 for next season, a swap with Leclerc has been mooted.
