Brawn: 2018 triple header an 'emergency measure'

Originally written by Joas van Wingerden. This version is a translation.

Formula One Managing Director of Motorsports Ross Brawn has insisted that having three Grand Prix races in as many weekends during the summer in 2018 is simply an 'emergency measure' and that the sport will avoid 'triple headers' where possible in the future.

The sport will have its first ever 21-race calendar next year, and this includes a 'triple header' over three consecutive weeks in France, Austria, and Britain. This is the first occasion this has happened in Formula One, but Brawn claimed that it was necessary in order to avoid a scheduling conflict with the upcoming football World Cup in Russia.

"The (football) world cup presented us with a very unusual problem," he said.

"The final is in the afternoon and it would have been very unfair to have run a race on that weekend.

"We could only solve that by having three races in a row but it's not something we want to repeat in the future. It was an emergency measure," he continued.

Brawn does not want to be forced into any more 'triple header' races after the 2018 season and went on to insist that it would not be logical or fair on the F1 travelling personnel who would be involved in preparation for free practice races, qualifying, and then Grand Prix races over three continuous weeks.

The 2018 Formula One calendar kicks off at the end of March with the Australia GP in Melbourne, while the season finishes off once again at thee Abu Dhabi GP in Yas Marina.
