Hulkenberg's savage put-down for Grosjean

Nico Hulkenberg says Romain Grosjean needs to "do his homework" after a hapless spin that ended both drivers' races, as well as that of Pierre Gasly, on the first lap of the Spanish Grand Prix. Grosjean will serve a three-place grid penalty at the Monaco Grand Prix over the incident.

Grosjean spun while trying to avoid contact with Haas team-mate Kevin Magnussen at turn three of the Circuit de Catalunya, sending a thick plume of smoke across the track as he put his foot to the floor in his attempts to get going again.

Instead, Grosjean collected Hulkenberg's Renault, ripping the rear-left tyre off, as well as the Toro Rosso of Gasly, which was sent skidding into the gravel minus a front-left wheel.

Grosjean spun into the wall behind the safety car at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and is under pressure, having failed to score a solitary point in five races, despite Haas' evident improvements in 2018.

And Hulkenberg had a withering piece of advice to the Frenchman when asked about the incident.

"I just got crashed into. Obviously, we saw that Romain spun and he came back into the track," said the German.

"I couldn't go anywhere, couldn't avoid him unfortunately and he took the back end of my car off and that's the end of my afternoon.

"He doesn't look great in that particular scenario. But generally he likes spinning a lot during the weekend but lap one is not a good time to do it with all the cars around.

"I think he's got to look at it and he's got some homework to do for himself."

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner said Grosjean's penalty was like a "kick in the face" and the driver himself professed his innocence after the race.

"There's not much to say. I lost the rear end in turn three and I just spun," said Grosjean.

"If you look at the footage, I had wanted to avoid contact with my teammate. Kevin had a bit of a wobble, I lifted off the throttle, and then the car just went.

"I'm sorry for the others that were involved – there wasn't much I could do once the car went. Kevin had a good race, which is good for the team. I had wanted a steady race, but that wasn't today."
