Aston Martin talk up F1 future in 2021

Liberty Media's vision for Formula 1 in 2021 could attract Aston Martin to the sport as an engine provider. The luxury sportscar makers are currently the title sponsor of Red Bull and have been reportedly attracted to the sport by proposed simpler power unit regulations.

Aston Martin's only previous venture into F1 came during the 1959 and 1960 campaigns.

Their best finish was a pair of sixth places in Great Britain and Portugal in '59 secured by Roy Salvadori. Later that year, Salvadori was a member of a victorious Aston Martin team at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The British manufacturer's interest in F1 has been ramped up in recent years, and their link with Red Bull will see the Milton Keynes squad placed as early favourites to take power units from Aston Martin if they are convinced to join F1.

"We are extremely pleased to hear today's news regarding the future of Formula One," Aston Martin president Andy palmer tweeted.

"These prospective changes support many of the requirements needed for Aston Martin to enter the sport as an engine supplier. This is a very positive step in the right direction."

Liberty Media published their "vision" for F1 in 2021 and beyond on Friday at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

A budget cap estimated at $150million and a pledge to develop cheaper, simpler engines are key to Liberty's plans.

Current heavyweights Mercedes and Ferrari are reportedly angry at the moves to simplify the sport, moves they believe will dilute their advantage.

The Scuderia have threatened to quit the sport if changes are not to their liking, although F1 may well feel emboldened by Aston Martin's interest - which could lessen the reputational impact of losing the Ferrari brand from the sport.
