Formula 1 carbon-neutral initiative "extremely important" for Alpine

New Renault CEO Luca de Meo has said he will ensure Alpine is at the forefront of an "extremely important" initiative to push Formula 1 into a carbon-neutral position.

The sport launched a plan to become carbon-neutral by 2030 in order to equalise the effect the sport has on the environment during race weekends, with the technical department at Formula 1 already working on a carbon-neutral fuel.

De Meo spoke of his fondness of the scheme, although was unsure of the implications it would have for the business.

"I like this idea very much, to be honest," he said.

"I don't know exactly what this will mean in terms of investment. Conceptually, I think we also need to address that kind of expectation because it is an expectation of society, not just pushed by regulators.

"Especially for the younger generation, it is extremely important so we need to address this issue. Don't ask me because I am not an expert on what can be done, what are the implications on cost and development et cetera.

"I think we need to go in that direction and for sure, if the world goes in this direction, I would welcome that and I will make sure Alpine is at the front of it."

The translation of technology between Formula 1 and road cars is aiding the push for greener transportation around the globe.

Although de Meo praised Renault's current efforts in utilising their position, he suggested Alpine could be in a better position to further implement Formula 1 technology into everyday life.

"I think Renault, in this case, has been very good at making the connection between the Formula 1 technology and what people can find in the street.

"With Alpine, because Alpine is doing a different type of car, we can even make this kind of connection further because we can use lightweight materials, electrification solutions et cetera."
