Ocon in a spin after Mugello "bites" back
Renault driver Esteban Ocon was left to rue his spin in qualifying for the Tuscan Grand Prix after being 'bitten' for trying to push too hard at Mugello .
Ocon spun at Poggio Secco on his final flying lap, bringing an effective end to Q3 with the majority of the top 10 behind him on the circuit.
One of the characteristics at Mugello that sets the new venue apart on the calendar is the abundance of grass and gravel, with Ocon stating the track bites back if you push the limits.
"It was one of those sessions where you are trying to push the limits more and more throughout," Ocon told Sky Sports F1.
"I felt really comfortable in the car. It felt great. I felt there was a lot of time that could be gained from my Q2 time.
"I thought it was the moment to do it but, unfortunately, it was a bit over the limit. I am sorry for the guys and drivers who couldn't complete the lap.
"Everyone pushed hard and the track bites you when you go over."
Ocon will start 10th at a circuit where overtaking will be at a premium. However, the Frenchman believes he should have been ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo had it not been for his error.
"[The lap] was looking great," added Ricciardo. "I did a 1:16.3 in Q2. It is a good time on the board. It is what could have been but we will have to look to tomorrow. The car is definitely working so good signs."
