Why Russian GP is extra 'special' for Verstappen

Max Verstappen is hoping for a birthday treat at the Russian Grand Prix, but admits the Sochi Autodrom is unlikely to suit Red Bull's high-downforce set-up. Verstappen is also expected to take engine penalties next week, putting a further downer on celebrations.

The Dutchman will turn 21 on the day of the race in Sochi, but the chances of him winning some extra champagne appear to be slim.

Red Bull have not stood on the podium since the race's introduction on the Formula 1 calendar in 2014 and Verstappen's best result is last season's run to fifth place.

After Verstappen took a brilliant second place in Singapore last time out with Renault's c-spec engine, Christian Horner revealed that a return to the b=spec power unit will likely see Verstappen fighting though the field on his big day.

"This year's Russian Grand Prix will be a special one for me," Verstappen said. "It is my 21^st birthday on Sunday, so hopefully I can make it one to remember.

"I think I celebrated my 18^th there also, so it won't be new to have my birthday in Sochi.

"I feel Russia is an up and coming Grand Prix as it still feels quite new to me. As well as being in the Olympic Park the track has a unique layout.

"The views form parts of the track and the hotels are really nice. On one side you have the mountains and on the other, the sea.

"It's not the best track for our car so it's vital to get the set-up right for specific corners, we know we will lose time on the long straights so cornering is key."
