'Ferrari has the best car, but not the best driver'
The Italian sports media have been quick to declare that the Formula One driver's and constructor's championships are now over for Ferrari following Lewis Hamilton's win at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, whilst claiming that the Prancing Horse "has the best car, but not the best driver".
The Brit put in a superb performance at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and claimed the flag to go 40 points clear of Sebastian Vettel in the driver's championship.
The media in Ferrari's home nation of Italy declared following the race that the championship was over.
"Goodbye to the Vettel title," La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote.
"It's similar to last year, except even more sad now because Ferrari has had the best car. But not the best driver," correspondent Umberto Zapelloni said.
In addition, La Repubblica simply said Singapore was "the end of the championship" for Ferrari.
These comments were echoed by former F1 driver and current paracyclist Alex Zanardi, who lavished huge praise on Hamilton's performance.
"It was only one race, but it reflected the state of affairs of this season," Zanardi told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
"After Monza everyone had the impression that a victory would put things right again. But Lewis (Hamilton) drove everyone into the ground with a perfect, almost poetic performance.
"You could see on Seb's face that the balance of power has changed," he continued.
"In pure mathematics, Ferrari can keep believing. But more realistically is that Hamilton is the one who is dominating."
