Hamilton's Silverstone streak over as Vettel extends lead
Sebastian Vettel snapped Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes' dominance of the British Grand Prix to extend his lead of the drivers' championship after a stunning Silverstone race. Vettel burst past Valtteri Bottas in the closing stages of Sunday's race, with Hamilton also getting beyond his team-mate to follow Vettel home in second.
Whether Bottas put up much of a fight to his stable-mate is unclear, but allowing Hamilton through means he is just eight points behind Vettel, who picked up his fourth win of 2018 and first at Silverstone since 2009.
Pole-sitter Hamilton's bid for a record-breaking sixth win at his home race went up in smoke at turn three as he fell behind Vettel and Bottas before a clip from Kimi Raikkonen pitched him into a spin and left him last on track, earning the Finn a 10-second penalty.
Hamilton quickly charged through the field, going from 18th to sixth in just 10 laps and two quickfire runs for the safety car ensured that he ended the race in familiar territory.
Although wearing more worn tyres, Hamilton was able to hold onto second place from Raikkonen late in the race after Bottas saw a potential first win of 2018 fail to even yield a podium finish.
Daniel Ricciardo followed in fifth in a Red Bull that struggled for pace all weekend, but the team once again saw points slip through their fingers as late gearbox failure ended Max Verstappen's race prematurely.
- Vettel took his 51st grand prix victory, moving him level with Alain Prost. Only Hamilton and Raikkonen have more.
- Although Fernando Alonso finished eighth, McLaren are down to seventh in the constructors' standings, behind Force India, who saw Esteban Ocon finish seventh.
- A resurgent Sauber team scored a first double DNF of the season. Charles Leclerc was released from the pits with a loose wheel, while Marcus Ericsson slammed into the barriers after going off at turn one.
- Romain Grosjean suffered another incident, colliding with Carlos Sainz Jr after the first safety car restart, brought on by Ericsson's shunt.
- Brendon Hartley did not start the race after Toro Rosso were unable to complete an engine change in time for the race, necessitated by his huge crash in Saturday practice.
