Kubica refuses to give opinion on Williams struggles
Robert Kubica has refused to provide his honest assessment of the current situation at Williams following their disappointing start to the Formula One season at the Australia Grand Prix this past weekend which saw Sergey Sirotkin retire and Lance Stroll finish fourteenth,
Last season, Williams had the experienced Felipe Massa in their ranks, but after the retirement of the Brazilian and the appointment of Sergey Sirotkin, the team now has the youngest on the grid.
In the opening GP of the new campaign this past Sunday, Sirotkin became the first retiree when, believe it or not, a plastic sandwich bag got into his brake mechanism causing it to overheat. Stroll did not do much better, as he finished fourteenth.
Kubica has been on the road to a comeback in F1 since suffering a career-threatening injury a few years ago which cost him part of his forearm. He was in contention for a driving seat with Williams, but was forced to settle for a reserve driver role.
However, there has been speculation that he could make the step up to replace Sirotkin or Stroll at some point in the season, and these theories only strengthened after Williams' performance at the weekend. Kubica himself has refused to suggest or deny this could happen.
"It would not be entirely correct for me to say what I think, because it's not my role," Kubica told Eleven Sports.
"But I think that Lance Stroll did a pretty good job. It was not easy, because he lost preparation for qualifying and when you lack experience, that is very important. That is why Sergey Sirotkin faced such a difficult task.
"After Barcelona, I said that to get into Q2 we need to be about two seconds from the leaders. In the end the deficit was about 2.2 seconds. What will happen in the future is unknown, but if we really look at the situation, it was difficult to expect something else at this point."
