Vettel moped ride sparks FIA investigation

Sebastian Vettel is under investigation by the FIA stewards after riding a scooter back to the pit lane at the end of the first practice session for the Australian Grand Prix.

Vettel had sparked the second red flag of F1's return to Melbourne's Albert Park when his Aston Martin suffered a loss of power with 15 minutes remaining in FP1.

Not for the first time, as smoke billowed from the back of the car, the four-time F1 champion grabbed a fire extinguisher from a marshal to douse away any threat of fire.

Once the session was completed, Vettel then grabbed a scooter and returned to the track so he could make his way back to his team's garage.

The German, with his 'No War' helmet perched on top of his head, waved to fans as he rode back, removing both hands at one stage.

The FIA, however, has taken a dim view of the incident and charged Vettel with 'entering the track without permission', with an investigation due to be completed before the start of FP2.

Aston Martin has also confirmed it will replace Vettel's power unit, without penalty ahead of the second session.
