1980 F1 champion Alan Jones has died at the age of 80, his wife announced on Thursday.

Jones was a key figure in Williams' rise to prominence in the late 70s and early 80s, finishing third in the championship in 1979 before taking the team's first championship – ahead of Nelson Piquet and team-mate Carlos Reutemann – the following season.

That 1980 triumph is still the most recent championship win by an Australian, and made him only the man from Down Under to win the F1 drivers' title after the legendary Jack Brabham.

Jones announced that he would retire from the sport after the 1981 season, in which he finished just four points from a second consecutive championship, although he did return for a single race with Arrows in 1983, and just over a season with Team Haas (no relation to the current Haas team) in 1985 and '86 before leaving the sport for good.
