Why Schumacher success could cost Haas
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner is aware he could lose Mick Schumacher if the German is able to use his Ferrari connections to 'go to the next level' if his performances are up to scratch.
Schumacher comfortably had the measure of team-mate Nikita Mazepin as the pair contested their rookie F1 campaigns at Haas in 2021.
Much as George Russell was part of the Mercedes junior set up during his three years at Williams, however, Schumacher remains a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
Whilst this could help to propel the German's career in an upwards trajectory, Steiner was cautious of the double-edged nature of any success for the 22-year-old.
Asked in an interview with GPFans in December if his Ferrari links could push Schumacher to the next level, Steiner answered: "I hope so, to be honest, but I cannot say yet.
"I hope so but I don't hope so. Because if he's good, I don't want him to leave but if he's good, he will be leaving."
Schumacher's seven-time world championship-winning father, Michael, scored five of his successes with Ferrari in consecutive years from 2000-04.
With Mick never having been shy on revealing his ambition to also represent the Scuderia, Steiner added: "Ferrari supported his whole career. That's his deal.
"I know what the deal is, but no, I think if he does a good job, he has got the opportunity.
"At the moment, we know 2021 was a learning year. This year, the pressure will be on a lot more."
