Lando Norris will serve a five-place grid penalty following his heavy crash during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

McLaren has been forced to change the gearbox on Norris' MCL35M after the Briton lost control of his car on the run-up out of Eau Rouge through to Raidillon due to the treacherous wet conditions in the early stages of Q3.

Despite the extensive damage to the car and a major rebuild for McLaren, Norris will only take a five-place penalty for the new gearbox as no replacement of the chassis is required which would have necessitated a pitlane start.

After naturally failing to set a time in Q3, Norris initially qualified 10th, albeit moving up a place to ninth due to Valtteri Bottas serving a five-place penalty for causing the first-corner crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It means Norris, declared fit to race following a visit to a local hospital to check over an injury to his left elbow, will start from 14th.
