Marko explains Red Bull's sudden pace gains

Victory in Austria and impressive at Silverstone.

Red Bull motorsport advisor Dr Helmut Marko has explained that the team's new front wing has played a crucial role in their sudden pace gain.

Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix, fitted with the new part, while Pierre Gasly delivered impressive pace on Friday at the British GP once he had been given it, having run with an old-spec version in Spielberg.

Red Bull had struggled to keep pace with Ferrari and in particular Mercedes over the opening rounds but the sudden gain in Austria came partly aided by Honda loosening some of the shackles in the power department.

Marko says a key difference has been felt in the team's new front wing, however, with estimates suggesting it has gained the RB15 three tenths of a second per lap.

"The new front wing brings us better balance," Marko is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. "The understeer is gone. And so we are better at putting the tyres in the right working window."

Gasly ran fastest in the first practice session at Silverstone, before placing fifth in FP2, beating Verstappen each time to offer a fine response to recent criticism of his performances.

The Frenchman has finished behind Verstappen in every race so far this season and was lapped by the Dutchman as he took victory in Austria.
