Hungarian Grand Prix Strategy Guide
One-stop strategies have been the order of many a Formula 1 race this season and it looks like the Hungarian Grand Prix will be no different. The threat of rain could always mix things up, of course, but we can expect to see plenty of rubber management at the Hungaroring.
The paucity of strategy options may not be what the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari want to see - Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo scattered down the grid, with Ferrari on the second row behind Mercedes after Saturday's wet qualifying.
According to the Met Office, there is a 40% chance of rain arriving an hour into the race.
A similar chance was given for last week's German Grand Prix, so hold on to your hats!
Quickest strategy for 70-lap #HungarianGP (in hot and dry conditions) is a one-stopper. Start on ultrasoft for 22 laps, then medium to the end. Nearly as quick: start on soft for 27 laps and then medium to the end. Alternatively, ultrasoft for 22 laps then soft to end (1/2) — Pirelli Motorsport (@pirellisport) July 28, 2018
A two-stopper (with higher ultrasoft degradation) could work as follows: two stints of 16 laps on ultrasoft, followed by a final stint on soft to the end. The pit stop window for ultrasoft is from laps 18-26 (assuming similar conditions to FP2 on Friday) #HungarianGP (2/2) — Pirelli Motorsport (@pirellisport) July 28, 2018
And here are the remaining tyres available to the drivers as they attempt to make good on those strategies...
