Ricciardo and Verstappen see opportunities at Hockenheim
Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen are hopeful of making a splash for Red Bull at the German grand Prix, despite Saturday not going in either's favour. Ricciardo came into the weekend knowing he would start Sunday's race last, while Max Verstappen could not make much of an impression, although he will qualify fourth.
Lewis Hamilton's exit with a hydraulic issue opened up a spot on the second row for Verstappen, who was six tenths of a second down on Sebastian Vettel's pole time.
Hamilton will start 14th, giving Ricciardo a target to chase as he makes his own way through the field.
He told Sky Sports: "I'm now just thinking about the excitement I will have starting from the back. That will be fun.
"I would rather start from the front of course, but there is still some fun to be had for sure.
"It looks like Lewis [Hamilton] and myself will be starting from the back so it'll be fun, see who gets to the front quickest."
Verstappen issued a familiar lament about the Red Bull's lack of one-lap power, but sees no reason why he can't muscle in on a battle between Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas when race conditions are in place.
"Fourth was the maximum we could do," he said. "You have to be realistic going into qualifying and if you don't have the horsepower you can't expect to be at the front.
"I was very happy with my lap, I feel we extracted the most out of the car so a satisfying day from my point of view.
"Our pace should be better tomorrow than in qualifying so with a good start I'll see how I can progress.
"I think I'm starting on the inside which isn't ideal but being on the second row helps."
