Haas driver Ferrucci fired by F2 team over Silverstone incident
Haas-backed Formula 2 driver Santino Ferrucci has been fired by is Trident team after ramming his team-mate Arjun Maini at the British Grand Prix and failing to honour payment commitments to the Formula 2 outfit. Haas have claimed they will deal with the matter during Formula 1's mid-season break.
Ferrucci ran Maini off the road at the Silverstone Sunday sprint race earlier this month, the pair having collided in Saturday's feature race too.
After the second race, Ferrucci bizarrely smashed into the right-rear of his team-mate's car.
He boasted about the incident on Twitter after the race, but later claimed it had been an accident and deleted his posts.
It was not the end of Ferrucci's discretions that weekend, however. He was also fined after being caught driving from the support paddock to race pitlane wearing just one glove and holding a mobile phone in his ungloved hand and refused to attend any stewards meetings over the numerous incidents.
The American was banned for four races and fined €66,000, but he will not return to action at all after Trident released a remarkable statement on Wednesday.
It read: "This decision was motivated by the events - which are now of public domain - occurred at Silverstone, as well as by the serious breach of Driver's payment obligations.
"Since the beginning of the championship, the Driver justified its payments' default with alleged failure by his sponsors to fulfil their obligations.
"It seems weird that, despite such kind of issues, Santino Ferrucci had the resources needed to enter the Detroit INDY race from June 1st to 3rd while, at the same time, he was not honouring his agreement with Trident Motorsport."
